Language Arts
Language arts consists of reading, writing, grammar, spelling, speaking, and listening. When possible, these will be extensions to social studies and science to reinforce concepts.
Reading
Reading strategies will be taught in a variety of formats; novel studies, short stories, poetry, self select, magazines, social studies and science. Some key concepts will be main idea, comparing and contrasting, identifying genre, author's purpose, story elements, summarizing, and inferencing.
Writing
Writing will be incorporated through many of the subject areas. They will be working on poetry, journaling, narratives, opinion papers, informational writing, peer responses, reports, short stories, and constructed responses.
Grammar/Spelling
Parts of speech, puctuation, antonyms, synonyms, idioms are some of the concepts we will cover in grammar. We will do a daily oral language to teach and review these concepts. Worksheets and quizzes will be assigned to check for mastery. There will be opportunities to work with word patterns and learn rules for spelling.
Speaking/Listening
Students will learn strategies for successful speaking and listening in groups, with partners, and presenting to the whole class.
